Random Bits of Life . . . With Pictures

Here’s a picture of the front of our house (sort of like a townhouse, really, since it’s attached to the houses on both sides).  I’ve tried to upload a video tour of the whole house several times, but I can’t get it to work.  Even though our internet connection is pretty fast, it’s not that fast!  So, I’ll post some pictures of the house as we go.  For now, here’s the front, from inside the gate/wall. These are Pa’s addiction.  He loves them.  They are a non-alcoholic, malt drink that, as the...

Thanksgiving List

Posted by on Dec 12, 2011 in Uncategorized | 1 comment

Here is my long anticipated (ha!) thanksgiving list.  I am thankful that:1.  Big girl “Mary” loves, loves, loves school!  This makes my job a breeze.2.  “Laura” is becoming better adjusted and her behavior has really improved/settled down in the past week or two.3.  We survived our first weekend without “Pa” around.  He’ll be teaching out in the countryside many weekends and will travel quite a bit.  Sometimes we’ll travel with him, but many times we’ll stay home.  The girls did great and...

Pictures of the girls

These are some pictures of the girls that I took the other day.  We’ve had rain every day for weeks now, so, when we had a dry morning, we had a picnic in the back...

Culture Stress and the Little Things

Posted by on Dec 4, 2011 in Uncategorized | 3 comments

When you live in another culture and are first going through the stress of just trying to survive, the little things can become major things.  This week, our shower has gone out, our fridge is leaking water onto the tile floor, which makes it super slippery for little people, the stove got so hot it melted the plug into the wall outlet, “Laura” dropped a Coke bottle, which shattered into millions of pieces, I dropped and broke the 3rd out of 6 glasses, etc, etc.  All these little problems seem so huge under the mountain of culture...

A Cultural Experience

Posted by on Nov 27, 2011 in Uncategorized | 1 comment

No matter how many times we go to a different culture, we find that we still have new things to learn.  Or, better yet, old things we knew that we have to be reminded of!  Saturday was a perfect example of this.  We were invited to a “graduation party” of a lady in our church.  She was insistent that we come and we wanted to support her.  However, the girls had had a crazy week and were exhausted, so it was decided that “Pa” would go.  On Saturday morning, he still didn’t know the time or the place, when our...

On a Roll and An Update

Posted by on Nov 27, 2011 in Uncategorized | 1 comment

Three posts on one evening may be a bit much, but here we go anyway.  The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of getting settled and set up in our new home.  Many repairs were done before we moved in, but some were done afterwards, so the entire first week, we were without a flushing toilet, working sink upstairs, or a hot shower.  The toilets were finally fixed and the sink upstairs running, but, oh what a time we have had with getting a hot shower!  Houses in K are not set up for hot water at all.  Pretty much the only way to have a hot...

Long Absence

Posted by on Nov 27, 2011 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Sorry about the long absence from the blog!  Our lives have been quite hectic and just plain crazy since we left Minnesota at the end of August!  We visited friends and family spread throughout 5 different states from the beginning of September through the 3rd week in October.  We had some great visits, but it was definitely an exhausting season.  Our girls are troopers, though, and did extremely well. In the 3rd week of October, we made the biggest transition we’ve had in several years, though, by coming on our “safari” to...

First Week in K

Posted by on Nov 2, 2011 in update | 0 comments

Well, it’s been a while since I posted, but I will try harder now that we are on the other side of the world. Our first week in K has been a pretty crazy one, but we’ve seen the Lord’s hand on us through all the ups and downs. The trip went really well. Laura was having some tummy pain, so getting ourselves through airports was interesting. She wanted to be carried the whole way and we had tons of carry-on and one very tired baby Carrie, but we made it just in time. Our layovers were very short, which made it crazy as well,...

The Beach

Pictures from a recent picnic at the beach. Although my girls have on their swim suits, they did not get very wet. The water was super chilly on this evening! Neely says, “look at the ducks.”   Scaling a big rock “Faith’s” island Ready for pizza (or pizzzy, as Neely calls...

Too Much Stuff

Posted by on Jul 23, 2011 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Every time we get ready to move (which is quite often!), we have a massive purge. And every time it feels wonderful! How do we end up with so much stuff, though? We, as Americans, have so much access to so many resources, it’s ridiculous. And don’t get me started on toys . . . 🙂 Many of the places we’ve lived, people really are truly nomadic. They often pack up their belongings, including their houses, and load it on the backs of a few camels. Seriously. I would love to live that light, but the pack rat in me tends to want...
